When you’re watching a sitcom, mute it when a guest star enters the screen. They just stand there, doing nothing but looks and hand gestures for 15 seconds. The camera will cut back-and-forth between the characters to break the awkward moment. They wait for the audience to calm down, then make their line work. On mute, you don’t hear the audience. You see the actor stall.
Is that what it looks like when somebody two feet away from you has been talking to you and stops, and you don’t have a clue what they said?
